Metal Carports in Spartanburg, SC

Ask anybody in Spartanburg County what finally pushed them to buy a carport and you will usually get one of two answers. Either they got tired of scraping pollen off the windshield every March, or they watched a limb come down during a storm and did the math on what a new hood costs.

★ Installed across Spartanburg County
Why a carport

What a carport does that a garage does not.

Shed Geek Structures sells metal carports from the Spartanburg display and has them installed across Spartanburg County and the surrounding Upstate. Single vehicle covers, doubles, RV and camper covers, and enclosed metal buildings, all sized to your property and anchored for the weather we actually get here.

A carport is the cheapest square footage you will ever put on your property. You are paying for a frame and a roof. No walls, no door, no floor system, no insulation.

For a lot of Upstate households that is exactly the right amount of building. The car needs shade and cover. It does not need a room.

The other thing a carport does is go up fast. Most standard sizes install in a day once the site is ready. Compare that to any timeline that involves a foundation and a framing crew.

Where a carport stops making sense is security and climate. Open sides mean anybody can walk under it, and wind driven rain will still find your vehicle from the side. If those matter, you can close in one, two, or all four sides, and at that point you are looking at a metal garage instead. Both are on the table.

Three roof styles

Regular roof, A-frame, or vertical panel.

Three roof styles, and in Spartanburg the difference matters more than the price gap suggests.

Entry level

Regular roof

Rounded corners, panels running lengthwise, entry level pricing. Water runs off the sides. Fine for a driveway with clear sky above it.

Boxed ends

A-frame, horizontal panels

Boxed ends and a peaked roofline that looks like a building instead of a cover. Sheds water better than a regular roof.

Our pick near trees

A-frame, vertical panels

Same peak, panels running top to bottom so everything slides straight off the edge.

Here is the local argument for vertical, and it is the single piece of advice worth taking off this page. Spartanburg County is covered in pine and oak. Between spring pollen, summer storms dropping leaves and small limbs, and pine straw coming down most of the year, a horizontal roof collects debris in the seams and holds it. That mat stays wet, it stays there, and it works on your panels.

Vertical panels do not give it anywhere to sit. If your carport is going anywhere near tree line, and out toward Cowpens, Pacolet, Woodruff or the north end of the county it usually is, take the vertical roof.

Sizing

Sizing it for what you actually park.

The most common mistake is buying to the vehicle instead of buying to the vehicle plus the doors opening.

12x21 single

One passenger vehicle. Standard size, and it works right up until you try to get out of the car without your door hitting a post.

18x21 to 20x21 double

Two vehicles side by side, or one vehicle with room to walk and work around it. If it is going to be your only cover and you own more than one vehicle, start here.

12x31 and longer

Trucks with trailers, dual axle setups, dually beds, and anything you tow. Length is where people undersize most often. Measure the truck and the trailer hitched together, not separately.

RV and camper covers

These get sized to your specific rig. A travel trailer, a fifth wheel and a Class A all need different clearance, and a standard carport height clears none of them. Bring the height measured with the AC unit on top rather than the brochure number, and we will spec to it.

Enclosed and partial

One side closed to block prevailing weather, two sides for a wind break, or fully enclosed with a roll-up door if you want something closer to a garage.

Wind

Anchoring, and why it is not the upsell.

Spartanburg sits inland, so nobody here is buying to coastal wind ratings. What we are buying to is thunderstorm season and what comes up the interstate in late summer.

Anybody in the county who was here in September 2024 remembers what the remnants of Helene did to the Upstate. Trees down across Spartanburg, Greer, Boiling Springs, and half the county without power for days. That was not a coastal event. It was inland wind doing inland damage, and it is the reason anchoring is written into the spec.

An unanchored metal carport is a wing, and it will behave like one. Anchoring gets specified as part of the order based on what your base actually is, so know whether you are putting it on dirt, gravel, or concrete before you sit down with us.

01

Ground anchors

For a gravel or dirt base. The standard on most Upstate driveways and side yards.

02

Concrete anchors

If you are setting on a slab. Bring the slab dimensions so the footprint lands inside the edges.

03

Asphalt anchors

Where a paved driveway is the base. Different hardware, same job.

Site prep

Piedmont clay and the pad underneath.

Spartanburg County is red clay top to bottom. It holds water, it goes slick, and it moves with the wet and dry cycle.

A carport is more forgiving on a bad base than a shed or a garage is, because there is no floor to go out of level. But you still do not want to be parking in a mud hole eight months out of the year, and you still want water moving away from your posts rather than pooling around them.

Gravel is cheap. A properly graded gravel pad under a carport costs a fraction of what the carport does and it is the difference between a clean setup and a slow annoyance. If your spot sits low or catches runoff from a slope, deal with that first.

Access matters too. The crew arrives with material on a truck. Tight gates, low limbs, a soft yard after a wet week, or a steep driveway all change what is possible. Walk your approach before install day.

Around the county

What Spartanburg County buys them for.

01

Daily driver cover

Sun, pollen, hail, and sap. The pollen alone gets people every spring.

02

Boats and campers

Lake Bowen, Lake Blalock, and Lake Cooley all sit inside the county, and Lake Bowen alone puts a lot of trailered boats in driveways around Inman and Chesnee. Cover extends the life of gel coat, canvas, and tires by years.

03

Equipment on acreage

Out past Woodruff, Cowpens and Pacolet, a cover over a tractor, a mower, or a hay setup is the practical middle ground between leaving it in the weather and putting up a building.

04

Work trucks and trailers

Trades running out of the Upstate cover the truck, the trailer, and the material. Per square foot it is the cheapest protection available.

05

Covered work space

Open sides, shade above. Anything you want to do outside in July without standing in the sun.

06

Golf carts and side by sides

Common on the larger lots and in the neighborhoods around the lakes.

Before you order

Permits and setbacks in Spartanburg County.

A 12x21 carport is 252 square feet, which puts the standard single size over the line most people assume they are under. Know the rules for your address before the order is placed.

Do you need a permit?

Under the South Carolina Residential Code, a one-story detached accessory structure of 200 square feet or less is exempt from a building permit. A 12x21 carport is 252 square feet, so plan on the permit for anything at or above the standard single size.

Spartanburg County still reviews accessory structures for placement, so the call happens either way.

Setbacks by district

Setbacks vary by zoning district. How far the structure has to sit from your property line, your house, and any easement depends on your specific address. There is no countywide number.

Bring the setback numbers back to us and we will size the structure to fit inside them.

Inside city limits

If you are inside Spartanburg city limits, or in Greer, Duncan, Lyman, Inman, Woodruff or another municipality, the city's rules apply rather than the county's.

Open sided structures are sometimes treated differently from enclosed ones, which is worth an actual phone call rather than an assumption.

Inside city limits, contact City of Spartanburg Building Inspections.

Make the call before you order. Contact Spartanburg County Planning and Development at (864) 596-3570, or your city planning office, and bring the numbers to the video conversation. This section is a starting point. The only answer that counts for your address is the one you get from them.

How buying works at the display.

There is nobody standing in the gravel waiting to walk up on you. Carports are ordered to your specifications rather than pulled off our Spartanburg display, so the video conversation is where sizing gets locked. Bring your vehicle dimensions, your base type, and your setbacks.

The sheds and barns on the display are already built. A carport is the exception: it gets sized to your vehicle on the call, then installed at your place.
01

Pull in

You are greeted and routed to the kiosk building. No appointment, any hour.

02

Talk it through on video

A Shed Geek connects on live video and draws on screen to show sizes, roof styles, leg heights, and how a given structure would sit on your lot.

03

Buy it, finance it, or leave

Finish the order, set up payments, or ask three questions and go. All three are normal.

Paying for it. Rent-to-own is available without a credit check, and financing is available on larger and enclosed builds. Bring a monthly number and we will work backward from it.

Frequently asked

Questions we get.

Vertical or horizontal roof panels?
Vertical if there are trees anywhere near it. In this county there usually are.
How tall does it need to be for my camper?
RV and camper covers get sized to your specific rig, including the AC unit on the roof. Bring the real measurement and we will spec the height to it.
Can I enclose it later?
Often, but it depends on the frame you start with. Say up front if you think you might, because it changes the recommendation.
Do you install, or is it drop off?
Installed. Carports are put up on your site across Spartanburg County and the surrounding Upstate. The site needs to be level and accessible.
How long does it take?
Most standard carports install in a day once the site is prepped. Enclosed and oversized builds run longer.
Does it need concrete?
No. Ground anchors into a gravel or dirt base are standard. Concrete is an option if you want it.
Will it hold up in a storm?
Anchoring is what determines that. Roof style has little to do with it. It gets specified based on your base as part of the order.

Get it sized right the first time.

Bring your vehicle dimensions and your setback numbers to the Spartanburg display, and a Shed Geek will spec it with you on video.
